CHAPTER 9

Iwas sitting on my couch with Rascal. His paws were on my lap, and he was nuzzling my waist as if I had some food hidden there, one of those playful, silly nuzzles I loved so much. He was a big boy now though, and if he had wanted to, he could have knocked me right off the couch.

We were watching Love Island together. It was a long time since we had been able to do this, as the last few weeks had been so hectic. Much to my surprise, Candy had not binned me after the awkward - if not downright weird - night at Port Sinister. She just carried on calling me her star reporter. My personal expose, My time with a Thorn Demon up close - oh the irony - had gone down very well. It sent The Tribune’s sales up even higher than The Planet’s. I had even been invited onto Breakfast TV to talk about the experience in person. I always tried to be fair to Carmen.

“She is a wonderful woman," I told Jepson Pulp, the presenter of Sunrise, Orament’s premier breakfast TV show. “She’s worked out how to coexist with her supernatural companion. I think Carmen proves the point that a lot of what we call magic is just an exaggerated version of human nature.“

Jepson Pulp looked bored. I panicked, knowing Sunrise thrived on human and supernatural people hating each other.

“Of course, you can sense her demonic qualities,” I said quickly. I didn’t want a bollocking from Candy for not making enough of a sensation out of Carmen.

Jepson Pulp sat up. “Tell me more.”

“Well, she’s uncannily beautiful for her age. She must be at least a hundred. I’m not surprised people thought she was a vamp. But she’s not. When I met her it was broad daylight, and the sun was shining in through the windows.”

“Although vamps aren’t necessarily affected by sunlight, are they?"

“It’s a bit of a myth that they can’t cope with the sun, that’s true," I said. “They can make spells, and they can wear sunscreen of course!”

I could not believe I was spouting this stuff - it was how people who had never met a vamp talked about them, as if it was easy being one. In fact, vamps suffered a whole set of ailments because of their sensitivity to the sun.

But there was laughter from around the TV studio. I smiled shyly. I wanted so badly to do well in my first TV appearance. I knew Candy would be watching. “And Carmen showed me around her garden - I don’t think she would be into gardening somehow if she was a vampire, do you?”

There were more titters all across the TV studio.

When I returned to the office that day, Candy said I had done well. I heard nothing from Carmen, but I hoped she would see that I tried to be fair to her whilst also delivering what Candy wanted from me. It was unlikely Carmen would see it that way, but I could not help wishing she would.
